Honor the people of Mexico who are suffering under the so-called “drug war” by honoring Javier Sicilia

To honor the people of Mexico, who are living, suffering, and resisting the so called “drug war,” I think the Human Rights Award should go to a Mexican citizen who has said NO to the government and the drug cartels: Javier Sicilia.

Sicilia is a journalist and poet whose son and six other young friends were murdered last March 28th for speaking out about drug gangs that operate with impunity in state of Morelos — one of many regions of Mexico afflicted by this war. Rather than suffering his son’s death in fear and silence, Sicilia spoke out. He wrote a public letter to Mexico’s politicians and criminals, denouncing their behavior and calling on regular citizens to rise up against violence.

We support Sicilia and want his prophetic voice –that of a bereaved father, human being, and outraged citizen — to be heard more widely. He has galvanized Mexico where more than 40,000 of people have been killed in the “drug war” that supposedly pits the Mexican government against criminal drug cartels but where reality gets complicated due to infiltration by wealthy narco criminal organizations into inners circles of government and the armed forces.

And who has suffered? The people of Mexico who are trying to live their lives with respect and dignity but are caught in the deadly crossfire. Sicilia has become the voice of the people of Mexico who oppose the mindless slaughter and who cry out for freedom from violence and respect for their dignity and human rights.
